Norway Through the Lens: A Photography Voyage with Sven-Erik Knoff
In May 2027, Sven-Erik Knoff joins site2sea as Photography Host for a seven-night voyage through Norway aboard M/S Rotterdam. A journey created for photographers, curious travellers and anyone who wants to experience Norway through a different lens.

Some places are best experienced by seeing more. Norway is one of them.
In May 2027, I will join site2sea as Photography Host for a seven-night voyage from Rotterdam into some of Norway’s most distinctive landscapes, cities and fjords aboard Holland America Line’s M/S Rotterdam.
It is a journey built around much more than reaching a series of destinations.
For me, photography has always been about learning to see a place. To understand the light, the landscape, the people, the details and the moments that might easily pass unnoticed.
That is the perspective I will bring onboard.
Together with site2sea CEO and Voyage Host Joshua Schwartz, I will accompany guests on a journey through Oslo, Kristiansand, Stavanger and Flåm, combined with scenic cruising through some of Norway’s extraordinary fjord landscapes.
And whether you travel with a professional camera, a compact camera or simply the phone in your pocket, the idea remains the same:
to experience Norway more deeply.
A country I have spent years exploring through the camera

Norway has been at the heart of much of my work as a photographer and filmmaker.
Over the years, I have travelled across the country photographing everything from vast mountain landscapes, fjords and remote coastlines to architecture, food, people, wildlife, industry and everyday life.
What continues to fascinate me is that Norway never really looks the same twice.
Weather moves quickly. Light changes by the minute. Mist can hide an entire mountain before revealing it again moments later. A landscape that appears almost monochrome in the morning can become filled with colour by evening.
For a photographer, those changes are not obstacles.
They are the story.
Learning to work with that unpredictability is part of learning to photograph Norway.
More than photography instruction
There will naturally be photography involved throughout the voyage.
We will talk about composition, light, visual storytelling, camera settings, perspective and how to approach landscapes that can sometimes feel almost overwhelmingly beautiful.
But I do not want this to become a week where people spend all their time thinking about equipment.
Some of the most important photographic decisions happen long before the shutter is pressed.
Where do you stand?
What do you leave outside the frame?
What is the light doing?
What is actually interesting about the scene in front of you?
And perhaps most importantly: what are you trying to communicate?
Those questions matter whether you are working with a medium-format camera or an iPhone.
The objective is not simply to return home with more photographs.
It is to return home seeing differently.
From Rotterdam into the Norwegian landscape
The voyage departs Rotterdam on 30 May 2027 aboard Holland America Line’s M/S Rotterdam.
Over seven nights, the journey combines time at sea with visits to Oslo, Kristiansand, Stavanger and Flåm, as well as scenic fjord cruising.
Each destination presents something different photographically.
Oslo combines the waterfront, contemporary architecture, city life and the changing landscapes of the Oslofjord.
Kristiansand brings us closer to the distinctive light, architecture and coastal character of southern Norway.
From Stavanger, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, with Lysefjord and the included journey towards Pulpit Rock offering a very different sense of scale.
And further north into the fjord landscape around Flåm, mountains, water, weather and human settlement come together in a way that has fascinated travellers, artists and photographers for generations.
The camera gives us a reason to slow down and notice all of it.
Photography is also a way of travelling
I have spent much of my professional life at the intersection of photography, film, hospitality and tourism.
Long before FotoKnoff, I worked internationally in hospitality and later with wine, tourism and destination development.
That background still influences the way I approach a place.
Travel is not simply about scenery.
It is about understanding where you are.
The landscape matters, but so do the people who live there, the history, the food, the architecture, the weather, the culture and the countless small details that create a sense of place.
Photography can become a remarkably effective way of paying attention to those things.
That is one of the reasons this voyage appealed to me.
It gives us time.
Time to look.
Time to talk.
Time to photograph.
And time to experience the landscape as it unfolds around us.
From Iconic Norway to a new journey
In 2017, I was part of an ambitious film project created around a journey through Norway.
The resulting film, Iconic Norway, went on to receive two awards at the Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards that same year.
But the project was never really about awards.
It came from the same fascination that still drives much of my work today: the extraordinary visual diversity of this country.
Mountains and cities. Silence and movement. Midnight light and rapidly changing weather. Huge landscapes and very small moments.
Almost a decade later, it feels particularly meaningful to return to some of those ideas in a completely different format.
This time, instead of only showing Norway through my own camera, I get to help other people discover how they want to see it through theirs.

You do not need to be a professional photographer
This is important.
The voyage has been created for photography enthusiasts, but it is not reserved for professionals.
You might have photographed for decades.
You might have bought your first camera recently.
You might photograph almost exclusively with your smartphone.
Or perhaps you simply love landscapes, travel and the idea of becoming better at noticing what is around you.
All are welcome.
Photography is the common language of the journey, not an entrance requirement.
My role is to meet people where they are and help them get more from both their photography and their experience of Norway.
A different way to discover Norway
There are many ways to travel through Norway.
This one happens to bring together several things I care deeply about: photography, storytelling, travel, nature, people and the opportunity to share a country I know well with an international group of guests.
I am very much looking forward to standing on deck as Norway appears on the horizon.
